The main truffle tree species and bushes (based on Greek and international literature) whose roots live along (mycorrhizal) with the mycelium of the truffle are:

 

  • Downy oak (Quercus pubescens)
  • Kermes oak (Quercus coccifera)
  • Holm oak (Quercus ilex)
  • Oriental hornbeam (Carpinus orientalis)
  • Common hornbeam (Carpinus betulus)
  • European hop-hornbeam (Ostrya carpinifolia)
  • Hazel (Corylus avellana)
  • White poplar (Populus alba)
  • Black poplar (Populus nigra)
  • Common aspen (Populus tremula)
  • Black pine (Pinus nigra)
  • Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis)
  • Turkish pine (Pinus brutia)
  • Italian stone pine (Pinus pinea)

 

Indicator plants

 

These plants that occur in certain habitats, are an excellent indicator in order to understand whether to look for truffles or not, regardless the existence of the aforementioned truffle trees.

 

Some examples of plants that are good indicators for lime soils are the following:

 

Aerthionema graecum, Aethionema creticum, Alyssum sexatile, Asphodeline lutea, Euphorbia exiqua, Calenula officinalis (Calendula), Galium incurvum, Galium setaseum, Anayallis arvensis, Uquercus cocitera, Vicia pereyrina, medicago arborea, Stellaria media, Taraxacum officanalle, salvia officinalis (Sage), Linaria vulgaris (flax), Gighorium intubus, Gampanula rapunculoides, Snagnisorba minor.
